ABCT Addictive Behaviors SIG Awards

Our SIG could not be successful without so many stellar members. During our annual meeting, we acknowledge members who have had a life-long impact on the field of addictive behaviors with our Lifetime Achievement Award, presented biannually (odd years), as well as members who make substantial early career contributions to the field of addictive behaviors with our Early Career Achievement Award (even years).  We also present the G. Alan Marlatt Memorial Research Award annually. This award comes with a monetary prize of $250 which is generously supported by Drs. Mark and Linda Sobell.   Finally, we also present a student poster award each year to the SIG Expo Poster that received with the highest reviewer ratings and had a student SIG member as the first author.

G. Alan Marlatt Mid-Career Research Award

The G. Alan Marlatt Mid-Career Research Award is generously sponsored by Drs. Mark and Linda Sobell. It
celebrates the tradition established by Dr. G. Alan Marlatt in his distinguished career as a pioneer and innovator in
cognitive-behavioral therapy and research on addictive behaviors. It is given annually to a member of our SIG who
received their doctoral degree between 4 and 12 years prior to receiving the award, who has conducted a program of
research in the field of addiction psychology demonstrating substantial scientific rigor. This research can focus on
understanding mechanisms of addiction or advancing evidence-based clinical practice in the addictions. Research
that addresses harm reduction or treatment innovations would be particularly consistent with Dr. Marlatt’s research
emphasis, but such a focus is not a requirement for the award. Award recipients receive a cash prize of $500 and a
plaque. Submit letter of recommendation in the portal below and email CV to rpeterson5@bryant.edu with subject
heading, SIG AWARD NOMINATION.

Early Career Award

The Addictive Behaviors SIG Early Career Award is given to an early career ABCT Addictive Behaviors SIG member
who has made a major contribution to the field of addictive behaviors within 7 years of receiving their terminal
degree. This award is given every other (even) year to an individual who has impacted our field as a researcher,
educator, clinician, and/or scholar. Now is the time to honor emerging excellence! Award recipients receive a plaque
commemorating their achievement and are invited to give a 30-minute presentation on their program of research at
the annual SIG meeting. Submit letter of recommendation in the portal below and email CV, with subject heading
SIG AWARD NOMINATION, to rpeterson5@bryant.edu

Underrepresented Student Travel Award

The Addictive Behaviors SIG offers travel awards up to $250 to students that are underrepresented in the
biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences as defined by the Department of Health and Human Services,
including students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are interested in addictions research and practice. Priority
will be given to students (1) who have never attended the convention, (2) who are presenting at the convention, and
(3) who have no other funds available to them. Award funds may be requested to cover costs related to: (1) ABCT
membership; (2) ABCT student conference registration; (3) presenting (e.g., poster printing); and/or (4) travel
associated with attending the ABCT convention. Applications should include the following in an email to
rpeterson5@bryant.edu:
(1) the student’s name;
(2) current enrollment status (undergraduate vs. graduate, year in program);
(3) name of faculty mentor (if applicable);
(4) statement of how many times the student has attended ABCT;
(5) description of the presentation type and title student will be giving at ABCT (if applicable);
(6) the type and amount of support requested, along with acknowledgement of any other funds being
received (e.g., funds from ABCT; funds from student’s college/university; reimbursement provided by faculty
mentor’s grant or a grant directly to the student).

Outstanding Student Poster Award

This award is given every year to an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student whose first-author
poster demonstrates excellence in advancing research on addictive behaviors. Award recipients receive a certificate
commemorating their achievement and $20 toward the purchase of a frame of their choosing. No nomination is
needed. The awardee is chosen from among first-author student SIG posters that are accepted for presentation.
